The California roll belongs to the uramaki, a type of roll that has the filling inside and the rice outside (unlike traditional maki, which is wrapped with a sheet of nori seaweed on the outside). These rolls were first made in the United States, in Los Angeles (California), at the restaurant "Tokyo Kaikan" in the 1970s. They came to the restaurant patrons' taste, and as a result the roll became very popular among fans of Asian cuisine around the world.
